The Fabrics of Modern Australia (FOMA) Exhibit and Runway was held in Sydney in October. From Indonesia, designer Janet Teowarang was chosen to be one of the showrunners at this annual event.
The lecturer in fashion at Surabaya's Ciputra University said that although Indonesia is already widely known for its batik, she wants to show something different.
“I brought batik from Pasuruan district which has aesthetic value, using natural coloring,” Ms Teowarang explained to SBS Indonesian.
Ms Teowarang admitted she was surprised when she first learned six years ago that the village in Pasuruan district had batik and weaving works from local artisans.
The recipient of the Australian Alumnni Grant Scheme then used the funding she received from the Australian government to develop a “sustainable” batik village, not only in terms of its materials but also human resources.
What is her story in bringing batik work of these home workers from Pasuruan to Australia? What are the challenges and how is the reception of the Australian market?
Listen to SBS Indonesian's interview with Janet Teowarang.
