In an interview with just before the announcement of this award, Thomas said he favours a return to the Tour with #1 on his back over the Giro next year.
"I definitely feel there's unfinished business there [Giro] but next year might be the wrong time," he said.
"Being there [at the Tour] with number one on my back, it would be a shame to know I wouldn't be at my best, so I'm definitely leaning more towards that.
"I just need to sit down with Tim [Kerrison, Team Sky coach] over the next few weeks and nail down a plan."
But what of Froome and his quest for a record-equalling fifth Tour victory?
"If we both wanted to go to the Tour 100%, as long as we both ride like we did this year, we can both do really well," Thomas said.
"As long as we don't race against each other, we both have our ambitions and that works well in training because we both push each other.
"Obviously Froomey wants to go back to the Tour and win his fifth, which would be a record.
'G' also said he's finally back into serious training following an extended period of whirlwind post-Tour publicity including a trip to Asia for Tour organisers and sitting next to Nicole Kidman on Graham Norton.
The Wales SPOTY was not the only award G has won in recognition for his Tour feat, with the announcement overnight he was voted sportsman of the year by Britain's Sports Journalists Association, beating out heavy weight world champion Anthony Joshua.

The Texan told a $100,000 investment he made in Uber back in 2009 has "saved our family," after losing millions in lawsuit settlements and lost endorsements when his doping past was fully unveiled in late 2012 and which he fessed up to in 2013 in Oprah Winfrey's presence.
The investment in Uber came via friend Chris Sacca's venture firm. "I didn't even know that he did Uber. I thought he was buying up a bunch of Twitter shares from employees or former employeess and the biggest investment was Uber."
While Armstrong did not divulge the current value of his investment he did comment it was "too good to be true." Believable given Uber itself is now valued at $120 billion (US) by some banks.
British Cycling announces virtual national championships in partnership with Zwift
Earlier this year, the UCI signalled its intentions to be ready for the IOC's eventual inclusion of esports in the Olympics but did not go as far as announcing a firm date for a virtual world championships.
But British Cycling has jumped on the front foot announcing a partnership with Zwift (also a sponsor of the t) for a virtual national championships in 2019. And it's open to any British Cycling member.
"Wearing your country’s national stripes is a huge honour," Zwift CEO Eric Min said. "But relatively few ever get the chance to compete.
“But that is not the case with the British Cycling eRacing Championships, powered by Zwift, as everyone in the country is eligible to throw their hat into the ring. We are looking at dates in February and March 2019, so now is a good time as ever to start training and keep in shape this winter.”
British Cycling’s Commercial Director, Jonathan Rigby said he's excited by the prospects the eSports market will provide for both participation and the elite levels of cycling.
