  • Kamala Harris is yet to concede.
  • Trump addressed supporters at a campaign event in Florida in the early hours of Wednesday morning (local time), saying they were part of the "greatest political movement of all time". His running mate, JD Vance, said Trump had staged the "greatest political comeback" after the then-incumbent lost the 2020 presidential election to Joe Biden.
  • Earlier, Harris was expected to address a watch party at Howard University in Washington DC but that didn't happen.
  • Projections suggest the election results were not as close as expected, with some questioning how pollsters got it wrong.

'Going to be rough': NATO prepares for Trump's return
While North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) chief , disquiet remains about the effect of a Trump administration on European security.

Russia continues to wage war on Ukraine just beyond the border of the alliance.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy the first battles between the Ukrainian military and North Korean troops fighting for Russia had opened "a new page in instability in the world".

Trump rattled NATO during the campaign by saying he'd encourage Moscow to "do whatever the hell they want" to members not spending enough on defence.

Senior diplomats at NATO, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive issues, sought to put a positive spin on his return for a second term, saying it could push Europe to get serious about protecting itself.
"Why be scared by Trump now? It is going to be rough, but at least he will pump some energy into the whole thing," one diplomat said.

Trump's first term in power was a rollercoaster for NATO as the president lambasted European allies such as Germany for weak defence spending and reportedly even mulled pulling the US out.

However, some officials said the alliance emerged from Trump's 2016-2020 term stronger as the president and his no-holds-barred style pressured Europe to spend more.

"During his first term, our working relationship focused on bolstering transatlantic security and adapting NATO for the future. In a world of growing instability, strong US leadership remains essential," former NATO head Jens Stoltenberg wrote on X.

What went wrong for the Democrats? Biden was a big problem, expert says
President Joe Biden was a serious liability for the Democrats, professor of US politics at Sydney University Brendan O'Connor said.

"The idea that Biden was suitable to run for a second term was I think, to most Americans kind of a nonsense, and his performance in that debate was confirmation for many people of what they'd already been thinking for over a year", he said.

"So it was extremely arrogant of Biden and foolish to think that he should run for a second term. He should have made it very clear that it was just a one term only that he was running for."

O'Connor also said the Democrats hurt their own chances by not holding a primary vote earlier in the year.

"They should have had some kind of open process where they debated what kind of issues needed to be at the forefront of their campaign and tested their candidates," he said.

"Harris may have lost the primary but then the party would have moved into the election with an even stronger candidate".

O'Connor also said Harris spoke about only a limited number of policy ideas on the campaign trail and should have been more willing to criticise and distance herself from the Biden administration.

What can we expect from a Trump presidency?
When Donald Trump was president from 2016-2020, he was seen as impulsive and unpredictable.

So that makes it hard to predict what his next term will be like, but we can analyse comments he's made on the campaign trail.

He's taken a hardline stance on immigration, an important issue for US voters.

He promised a mass deportation of all undocumented migrants if elected, a proposal criticised by both human rights organisations and economists.

During the , Trump falsely claimed: "In Springfield, they're eating the dogs. The people that came in, they're eating the cats. They're eating the pets of the people that live there."

He has sincerelating to Haitian immigrants in the Ohio city. There have been no credible reports of Haitians eating pets, and officials in Ohio — including Republicans — have repeatedly said the story is untrue.

Trump made tariffs and tax cuts the key elements of his economic pitch to voters. He has said he would cut federal spending, which Republicans blame for triggering consumer price spikes, and trim back federal regulations.

Democrats made reproductive rights and improving access to abortion

Trump has said the matter should be left to individual states and that he does not support a national ban on the procedure.

He supports exceptions for rape, incest, and to protect the life of the mother and has said he would not block access to abortion medication. He has also expressed support for in vitro fertilisation, or IVF, which some anti-abortion proponents want to ban.
