Some US media are calling the presidency for Trump
Some US networks have declared the race over and that Donald Trump will return to the White House as president.

We are using AP to call races, and by their tally he is on 248 Electoral College votes, short of the 270 needed.

Should Trump win Alaska as expected, and pick up Pennsylvania, that will take him to 270.

Other states where calls have not been made include Arizona, Minnesota and Wisconsin.

We will only be declaring a projected winner when AP does.

AP explains that they'll call a state only when it's possible that the trailing candidate cannot catch the leader, looking at a combination of exit polls, early votes, and county-by-county analysis.

'Looks like a re-run of 2016': Harris' path to victory unlikely, expert says
It's very likely that Donald Trump will be elected US president again, Brendon O'Connor, professor of US politics at the University of Sydney, says.

Trump is projected to win the swing states of North Carolina and Georgia.

"He's also a very good chance to win, possibly in Arizona as well," O'Connor said.

To win the 270 Electoral College votes needed, Democrat Kamala Harris would have to win Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan.

But O'Connor says: "She's looking at difficulty in all three of those key states, and those were the three states that pretty much cost Hillary Clinton the 2016 election. So it's looking like a bit of a re-run of 2016 at this point."

O'Connor says it's technically possible that Harris could still win those states but is currently behind and unlikely to catch up. He points out that the New York Times predicts a 90 per cent chance of a Trump victory.

Harris campaign co-chair: We will continue overnight to fight
Cedric Richmond, co-chair of the Harris campaign, addressed supporters at Howard University and thanked them for their support and said we would not hear from Harris tonight.

"Thank you for all that you have done, thank you for being here, thank you for believing in the promise of America. We still have the votes to count, we still have states that have not been called yet.

"We will continue overnight to fight to make sure that every vote is counted, that every voice has spoken, so you won't hear from the Vice President tonight, but you will hear from her tomorrow.

"She will be back here tomorrow to address not only the HSU family, not only to address her supporters, but to address the nation. So, thank you, we believe in you, may God let you, may God keep you, and go HU and Go Harris! Thank you all."

What's going on with the seven key swing states?
We've mentioned there are seven key states to watch this election — Nevada, Arizona, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Michigan, Wisconsin and North Carolina.

These swing states were all predicted to have very close races, which has turned out to be the case.

Only one has been called — North Carolina has been won by Republican candidate Donald Trump, as it was in 2020.

Analysts have said a candidate will need to win at least three of the swing states to win the election.
