An Indian-origin man in the UK has been handed life sentence for killing his ex-wife in a “violent” act of vengeance”.
51-year-old Ashwin Daudia – a factory worker - was accused of killing his former wife Kiran Daudia (46) and then stuffing her body in a suitcase before dumping it in an alleyway, the reported.
He pleaded not guilty to the murder charge and denied he deliberately attacked Kiran. He claimed he lost control during an argument with her at their home in Leicester in January last year.
Though Ashwin and Kiran had divorced in 2014, but they continued to live under the same roof.
On the day Kiran was murdered, the house was due to be bought by her sister and she was to continue living there.
“How can I not lose control? I didn’t know what I was doing,” he said responding to the prosecutor’s question of whether he planned the murder.
He also denied the allegation that he waited for his ex-wife to return home from work to deliberately kill her.
Ashwin was supposed to leave the shared house on the day of the murder. He told the court that Kiran got angry at him as he still hadn’t packed his bags and moved out. He claimed she told him to swore at him and told him to go to India and die there.
“I felt very bad,” he said.
He said he put his hand on her mouth to silence her and then forcefully squeezed her neck.
He then lied to his two sons, relatives and police by falsely claiming that his ex-wife did not return home from a call centre where she was working. He stuffed the dead body in a suitcase that was discovered by the police next day.
The prosecutor claimed Ashwin had murdered Kiran after growing increasingly resentful of his ex-wife who had joined a dating agency to meet other men.
“You deliberately made no attempt to pack or arrange alternative accommodation.
Judge Spencer said the house was being sold to his ex-wife’s sister.
“You were set on violent vengeance.”
“You have deprived this world of a vibrant woman, who had much to offer and who lived for her children.
He was sentenced at Leicester Crown Court on Friday.
