Bong Joon Ho was the undeniable winner of yesterday’s Oscars. He won four categories with his film Parasite, taking out Best Original Screenplay, Best International Feature Film, Best Director and Best Picture.
Fans reacted with enthusiasm to his visible shock and delight during the ceremony, with gifs of Bong giggling onstage while accepting his first award of the night now circling the internet.
But an unexpected star has come out of Boon’s night of success as fans applaud his interpreter Sharon Choi. Choi has interpreted for Bong and the Parasite team throughout the awards season and fans are voicing their admiration for her interpreting talents.
One social media user summed it up best , “The real star of the Oscars is Bong Joon-ho’s translator Sharon Choi.” Another agreed , “Sharon Choi is tremendous. I’ve seen her translate at so many awards shows now and she’s unflappable and a great, deadpan foil for the playful Director Bong.” Another , “Shoutout to Sharon Choi, Bong Joon Ho’s translator. She’s been by his side as he sweeps awards. Translation is *very* hard. She’s awesome.”
Bong interjected to joke, “She has a big fandom,” before telling the reporters, “She’s perfect and we all depend on her.”
Even Bong Joon Ho agreed. In an interview with after the Oscars, Choi was asked about her role in the spotlight as Bong’s translator throughout the season. Bong interjected to joke, “She has a big fandom,” before telling the reporters, “She’s perfect and we all depend on her.”
But it seems that everyone wants to know more about her with one user , “I want to know everything about Sharon Choi’s story as Bong Joon-ho’s translator during awards season. She is everything!”
And Bong Joon Ho didn’t let us down. In the same interview, he revealed that “she’s also a great filmmaker”. Choi, who was clearly surprised that she had been thrust into the spotlight on such a momentous day for Bong, then also admitted, “Yes, I want to direct.”
Fans were fully on board with the idea of Choi making the leap from interpreting into directing. Taking to social media to voice their support, they said, “Give Sharon Choi all the money, and support.” Another said, “sharon choi said she wants to direct too we WILL be supporting her future oscar sweep”. Another put it very simply saying, “Let Sharon Choi direct a movie damnit!”
So if the online enthusiasm for Sharon Choi is anything to go by, it looks like we’ll be seeing her directing some Oscar-worthy movies very soon!
