A group of 10 Iron Series competitors, all qualified surf lifesavers, were forced into action yesterday shortly after round four of the series wrapped up to help rescue a group of people sucked into a dangerous rip at Sydney's Maroubra Beach.

The athletes had just taken part in the medal presentations and were recovering from the day's competition when they spotted the group of 25 swimmers at around 4pm, approximately 100 metres off-shore and 300 metres south of the competition area.
They were able to stabilise the group and wait for Inflatable Rescue Boats, that were already in place for the competition, to arrive and take them to shore safely.

All swimmers were eventually treated by the Maroubra patrol with no major injuries reported.

Fresh from her round four Iron Series win, Lana Rogers was one of the first athletes on the scene.

“Lucky all of us were here still," Rogers said. "About 20 athletes just raced to save the day and there was about 20 or 30 people out there [in trouble]. I was also there and lucky we got to the beach safely with all the people.
“Classic Maroubra Beach, the water is moving quickly and I think people go in swimming thinking they’ll stay in one place, and they won't.

"The water was moving very quickly and the rip just took them out to sea."

Speaking in response to the event, Surf Life Saving Australia’s Sport Manager Wayne Druery stressed that being rescue ready was one of the most important aspects of surf lifesaving.

“Today shows us that in the blink of an eye conditions can change and if surf lifesavers can’t see you, they can’t save you," Druery said.

"Today, not only did these swimmers benefit from the great skills of patrolled lifesavers and lifeguards on the beach, but also our elite Ironmen and Ironwomen.

“Our athletes didn’t hesitate to put their lifesaving training into action and as a result, all swimmers in trouble were returned safely to their families."
Rounds three and four of the Iron Series were held at Maroubra Beach this past weekend.

Two-time Series champion Rogers leads the Ironwoman leaderboard, with current Australian Ironman champion Ali Day holding a one-point lead over defending Series champion Matt Bevilacqua.
