Fires in Los Angeles, USA, have caused heavy devastation. While the exact causes of these fires have not yet been identified, global warming and climate change could be among the contributing factors. To understand the role of global warming and climate change in these fires, North America-based environmentalist Harminder Dhillon spoke with SBS Punjabi.

Key Points
  • At least 24 people have lost their lives in these fires.
  • About 16,000 hectares of land has been affected by these fires.
  • An Australian person has died in these fires in America.
According to the latest data from California's Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, these fires have already claimed 24 lives. The Palisades, Eaton, and Hurst fires alone have burned approximately 16,000 hectares of land. Last week, the U.S. National Weather Service stated that a lack of rain, low humidity, and dry vegetation have worsened the situation. Additionally, factors such as densely populated areas in Los Angeles, hanging power lines, and wooden telephone poles are also contributing to the fires.

The World Meteorological Organization and NASA confirmed that 2024 has been the hottest year on record globally, while the Australian Bureau of Meteorology reported that, based on available data, this has been the second hottest year in Australia’s history. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also emphasized the need for people and organizations to prepare for more extreme weather events and natural disasters caused by the climate crisis.

But can we still take steps today to prevent such events in the future? Canadian environmentalist and lawyer Harminder Dhillon shared insights to shed light on this. Listen to this conversation on our podcast.
