An international student from India has been found guilty of causing a fatal crash in Perth last year which killed a motorbike rider.

21-year-old Preetpal Singh was driving a Mitsubishi Lancer in May last year when it hit Daniel Wellfare’s bike in Medina- in the south of Perth.

Mr. Wellfare- a father of four- died in a hospital shortly after he was taken there.

On Thursday, a court found Preetpal Singh guilty of dangerous driving causing death. The police had told the court that Singh entered the intersection with insufficient time to avoid the crash.

Preetpal was taken into custody following the orders by the Court after it was said there was a risk of him fleeing the country before the sentencing, reported. His sentence will be announced next month.

Four of Singh’s university friends were present in court who broke into tears when the verdict was announced.

Mr. Wellfare’s family members say they have forgiven Singh and do not want him to go to jail.

“I wouldn’t wish that upon anybody. It would be nice for him to move on and to just go back to his family, be with his family,” Mr. Wellfare’s partner Nanlee Leonard told Seven News.

"There are no winners. We have a young boy going to jail for a long time, we’ve lost a son, our grandchildren have lost their father,” Daniel’s step mother Helen Bartlett said outside court.
