" The September quarter is expected to see the economy contract and see the fuller impact of the New South Wales and VIctorian lockdowns. In Western Australia, they've got job shortages. In Queensland, the tourism businesses are doing it tough. Annastacia Palaszczuk will have to tell the Sunshine Coast or Gold Coast tourism operator, the theme park operators, why does she want to keep the border is closed when the rest of the country is opening up? it's a desperate denial of the reality and is not based on the medical advice."

"What we have said before is by the end of September, the stocks which World Food Program has in the country, will be out. We will be out of stocks. We will not be able to provide those essential food items because we will be out of stocks. And for us to keep the current demand, we need at least $200 million only for the food sector.  At least one third plus of this country's population right now is not sure that that their family will have a meal every day or not."

Victoria has recorded 176 new locally acquired COVID-19 cases, a day after Premier Daniel Andrews abandoned Victoria's elimination strategy.

Contact tracers have so far linked 83 of the new cases to existing outbreaks.

Mr Andrews says it is no longer possible to drive case numbers down to zero, however has extended the state's lockdown for at least another three weeks.

Restrictions will remain until 70 per cent of the eligible population has had at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.

Federal Treasurer Josh Frydenberg has accused Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk of denying reality, after she flagged border restrictions could remain until all children are vaccinated against COVID-19.

There is currently no COVID-19 vaccine approved for use in children between zero and 12 years of age anywhere in the world although Pfizer is reportedly intending to apply to get its vaccine assessed for emergency use approval in the United States for 5 to 11 year old.

Mr Frydenberg told Channel Seven economic recovery is reliant on leaders sticking to the national plan.

The United Nation's top human rights official in Afghanistan, Ramiz Alakbarov, warns half of all Afghan children under five are in an "extreme state of malnutrition."

Conflict, drought and a shortage of international aid are culminating in what Mr Alakbarov says is "humanitarian catastrophe", days after the United States ended its 20 year military presence.
