According to the 2021 census, Dinka-speaking migrants from South Sudan face a 7.8% rate of unemployment, while the national rate sits at 4.2%.
It’s common for migrants to experience issues gaining employment in their relevant fields, especially if they’ve .
However, in this episode, SBS Examines spoke to James Akol and Bol Kuol.
Both graduated from Australian universities, but years on they’re still not employed in their fields - human resources and business, respectively.
Mr Kuol told SBS Examines he’s applied for 73 jobs, and never received an offer to even interview for a position.
Mr Akol said he was offered a job in human resources at a charity. He interviewed successfully over the phone, but when he turned up to sign his contract, the offer was withdrawn.
“As soon as they saw me they said ‘oh you are from an African background… this is one issue’,” he said.
