A Japanese artist known only as is drumming up significant attention on social media for his incredibly intricate fruit carvings.

The concept of decorating food and other items in such a specific way has its own term in Japanese; mukimono, which translates roughly to ‘the stripping of things.’

Gaku has only been posting his works on Instagram for just 8 months, but has already amassed over 30,000 followers.
The artist strips back apples, broccoli, lemon, radishes, and bananas - to name a few - and his carvings range from patterns to specific characters.
From dragons made from bananas to a teeny tiny carving of a Pixar character, Gaku explores many different themes and concepts.
The fruit that features most in Gaku’s images is the humble apple.

If you have ever absent-mindedly left half an apple on your desk, you’ll know that the inside flesh starts to go brown when exposed to oxygen - which means that the artist must work fairly quickly to complete his carvings.
Whilst most of Gaku’s creations are rather graceful, some are a little more cheeky.
His most popular pieces are those that seem nearly impossible.
SBS tried to contact Gaku for comment, but he proved as mysterious as his artwork.
