In the month ahead, get set to welcome favourite series new and old, the premiere of a brand-new Nordic noir, and documentary series to fire up the mix. Plus, SBS On Demand launches a special event in collaboration with the Sydney Film Festival. 

Bosch

As the die-hard fans of this long-running drama series well know, LAPD homicide detective Harry Bosch (Titus Welliver) will stop at nothing to catch the bad guys and bring them to justice. The sixth season of this acclaimed drama sees our man racing against time to defuse a potentially deadly terrorist attack on US soil and catch the perpetrators. If anyone can do this, Bosch can.

From Israel, this fast-paced drama gripped viewers when its first season premiered in April. The explosive twists continue in the second, quite literally when an explosion mars the opening of an oil pipeline to Turkey, killing several government officials. The three citizens present at the event disappear, marking them as key suspects. The media has a field day, labelling the blast a terrorist attack, as the lives of the suspects’ loved ones are turned upside down. Were they really involved? Prepare for unexpected connections and surprising alliances to emerge.

After sparking a national discussion on the homelessness crisis and inspiring those with the power and means to tackle it, Filthy Rich and Homeless returns. ER doctor and businessman Dr. Andrew Rochford, Deputy Lord Mayor of Melbourne Arron Wood, restauranteur and entrepreneur Pauline Nguyen, comedian and radio presenter Ciaran Lyons and actress and model Ellie Gonsalves discover what life is like for the nation’s homeless. This season travels to the more hidden crisis in regional centres and smaller towns in NSW.

Sydney Film Festival Selects collection at SBS On Demand

DNA

There’s no stopping the top-quality drama coming out of Denmark. In a co-production with France, DNA brings together stars Nicholas Bro (The Bridge, The Killing) and Charlotte Rampling (45 Years, Broadchurch) as Rolf Larsen, a respected Copenhagen detective, and Claire, a seasoned French investigator. Five years after Rolf’s baby daughter goes missing, a bungle in the DNA database is discovered, renewing hope she might still be alive. He joins forces with Claire, who’s investigating a similar case with ties to an international child trafficking ring in the desperate hope of finally uncovering the truth.

From the creator, writer and executive producer of highly acclaimed The Killing, DNA’s cast also includes rising Polish star Zofia Wichlacz (Netflix thriller 1983) and Olivia Joof (Boogie).

Cults and Extreme Beliefs

Emmy Award-winning investigative journalist Elizabeth Vargas (below) takes an unfiltered look at sects and controversial organisations in this nine-part documentary series. With the insights of former members, Vargas uncovers how these sects alter people’s belief systems. Revealing stories that profoundly impact people’s lives, but are often hidden from society, each episode examines a group, such as NXIVM who sell ‘self-help’ seminars, through the eyes of past members. We also hear the views of believers and leaders who are still active within the groups.

The Bureau

Fans of this show have been awaiting its return with baited breath. Season 5 sees new Director of Internal Security, JJA (Mathieu Amalric) running the office while Marie-Jeanne (Florence Loiret Caille) takes on fieldwork in Egypt. Back at the DGSE, staff are shaken by rumours published about the fate of Malotru (Mathieu Kassovitz). Is he dead or alive? What role did the DGSE and the CIA play? JJA’s paranoia heightens as do the stress levels of Sisteron (Jonathan Zaccaï) and Ellenstein (Jules Sagot). Will we finally learn the truth?

Joining the cast this season is film actor Louis Garrel (, ) as agent Mille Sabords. Behind the scenes, Palme d’Or and César-winning director Jacques Audiard (, A Prophet) is on board, and Kassovitz also directs several episodes.

Wild District

From Colombia comes this action drama series centred on Yei Yei (Juan Pablo Raba). Kidnapped by the FARC at 13 and trained as a one-man army, when he escapes the jungle to Bogotá, his skills are quickly put to use in an undercover police operation. Tasked with infiltrating a dangerous criminal organisation run by another ex-FARC, Apache (Christian Tappan), Yei Yei has now to navigate a different kind of jungle. Will he succeed in protecting the family he’s just reunited with? And will he face down his moral dilemma – on which side of the law does he belong?

Das Boot

This critically acclaimed drama series, exploring how the human soul can become twisted by war, returns to December 1942, and U-boat ace Johannes von Reinhartz (Clemens Schick) has a new mission to transport three saboteurs to the USA on board U-822. When his loyalty is questioned, U-612, commanded by CO Wrangel (Stefan Konarske), is sent in pursuit. Former U-612 CO Hoffmann (Rick Okon) finds shelter in New York with Sam Greenwood (Vincent Kartheiser), who owes his life to Hoffmann. There, he meets sleazy German-born lawyer Berger (Thomas Kretschmann), but will Berger help Hoffmann return home and clear his name?

Back in La Rochelle, Simone (Vicky Krieps) and her roommate Margot (Fleur Geffrier) battle to secure an escape route for a Jewish family, but Forster (Tom Wlaschiha), Head of the Gestapo, is watching their every move. 

Season 2 welcomes several new cast members including Casino Royale’s Clemens Schick, Avengers: Age of Ultron’s Thomas Kretschmann, Terminator’s Rochelle Neil and The Downfall’s Ulrich Matthes. Also joining the cast is Les Petits Princes’s Paul Bartel, Game of Thrones’ Michael McElhatton and The White Ribbon’s Sebastian Hülk.

Das Boot season 2 is now streaming at SBS On Demand. Season 2 episodes will air on SBS and SBS VICELAND later in the year. 

Forged In Fire

One of more unique competition shows you will see, each episode pits four new participants against each other to make a specific type of weapon by hand. With weapons experts overseeing the elimination rounds and assessing the quality of craftsmanship, out of the forge come a variety of bladed weapons, from Viking battle axes and Samurai swords to Indian claw daggers. With a $10,000 cash prize at stake, the heat is turned right up in this battle for the Forged in Fire Champion.
