As we brace ourselves for the launch of the gripping thriller The Night Manager, making its Australian free-to-air debut on SBS and SBS On Demand from 22 March, word is building that the BBC are working towards commissioning a second season of The Night Manager. For fans of John le Carré and/or Tom Hiddleston partially unbuttoned in linen shirts, this is exciting news.
Series director Susanne Bier, who won a Golden Globe for her work on the show, that they are working on scripts for a second series.
"We all want very much to do a season two but the thing we absolutely do not want is to do something that does not live up to the level of season one," she said. "That would be a really bad idea."
She added that the script was currently being written by a "team of writers".
Of course, a follow-up series isn't without it's challenges. First, there is the fact that season one star Tom Hiddleston is incredibly busy being a huge movie star now. The second is the challenge of creating fresh new material. While that sounds easy enough, as producer : "There is no book and there's never been a le Carré story which has been extended beyond the confines of the novel".
This is great news for both fans of the show and anyone trying to buy my dad a Blu-ray for his birthday in the next year or two.
The first season of The Night Manager starts on SBS and SBS On Demand from 22 March.
