This was unexpected. A trailer for The Handmaid's Tale seemed like an ill-fit for the Super Bowl, but it was savagely perfect. This wasn't just a regular trailer, but rather it was a brutal parody of one of American politics best known advertising campaigns. What better time to drop it than during the biggest sporting event on American television?
The target of the TV commercial was Ronald Reagan's 1984 Presidential advertisement "It's Morning Again In America".
The Handmaid's Tale season 3 trailer uses the same music and a similar narrator to the original TV commercial, showing us Gileadean propaganda. Midway through, however, it takes a much darker turn revealing the truth of the revolution being led by June/Offred in the third season of the show:
"Wake up America - morning's over," Offred tells us.
SBS will air the double-episode season premiere of The Handmaid’s Tale at 8.30pm Thursday 6 June, with episodes 1-3 available on SBS On Demand. A second double episode will air on Thursday 13 June, with weekly episodes to follow.
