Award-winning, hit drama series The Handmaid’s Tale is back for its long-awaited fourth season. Premiere episodes will be fast-tracked from the US, and will screen in Australia exclusively on SBS and at SBS On Demand.
A brand new season trailer, dropped by Hulu today, shows June (Elisabeth Moss) on the run, after the dramatic events of season 3. After years of being confined to the houses of Commanders Waterford (Joseph Fiennes) and Lawrence (Bradley Whitford), season 4 promises to be nomadic, and focused on the uprising against the totalitarian rulers of Gilead:
In describing the new season at today's Television Critics Association Winter 2021 Press Tour presentation, executive producer Warren Littlefield said, "This year, in some ways it's about patience rewarded."
"We've planted seeds for several years about this uprising and hotspot in Chicago, and that the forces of Gilead really can't keep it under control. And now we go, we leave our central universe around the greater Boston area and boom, we're in a completely different environment.
"In season 4, we have no home base," Littlefield said.Production of the 10-episode season was suspended in 2020 due to the global Coronavirus pandemic, but recommenced after a six-month hiatus. Star and executive producer Elisabeth Moss steps into the director's chair this year, helming three episodes of the season: episodes 3, 8 and 9.
