If you didn’t see the first season of Search Party you are missing out - now is the time to track it down like a missing acquaintance, grab some PJs, and settle in for your most snatched fun-stery (that’s 'fun mystery') since Veronica Mars became a mum.
Search Party is about a group of friends in New York who are going about their lives when an, at best, “tangential” friend goes missing. This reality check sparks Dory (Alia Shawkat), your new favourite TV hero I guarantee it, into a throw-caution-to-the-wind investigation the type of which is usually reserved for movies where Liam Neeson growls into a phone.
But what makes it amazing is how hilarious and dramatic it is and more importantly just how well it makes you fall in love with it’s cast of misfit toys. So let’s meet the peeps you’re about to become BFFs with.
Listen to an interview with Meredith Hagner (Portia) and John Reynolds (Drew) on The Playlist podcast:
Dory Sief (Alia Shawkat)
She’s our hero. She’s funny, smart, tenacious and a complete mess. She wants so badly to do the right thing that nothing else matters. She is the friend who just joined F45 and will not shut up about it, but you can’t help but love her for it because you see how happy it’s making her.Watching Dory doggedly chase the phantom spectre of Chantal Witherbottom is both heartbreaking and belly-aching. The comedy of her hunt is sometimes a little too close to the bone there’s something so admirable about her desire, however misplaced.

Everyone needs a warrior at their side, the person who’ll defend them against whatever comes, b**ch about your exes once they’re gone and track your arse down should you go missing, be kidnapped by a baby cult or worse. Dory. Is. That. Friend.
Drew Gardner (John Reynolds)
Drew is the tall and handsome “good guy” character that would make Twilight readers swoon… except for the fact that he’s a massive wimp… THANK GOODNESS! For the rest of us guys out here who would absolutely love to be supportive of our partner’s obsessions interests, but aren’t sure we’d be super keen with them tracking down a potential murder victim and/or their killer it’s refreshing to see a dude who is on our level. He’s a good guy - he’s just a little freaked out. Don’t we all need a friend who’s a little more caution than wind?

Portia Davenport (Meredith Hanger)
In any other show Portia would be the worst. She’s blonde, gorgeous, more than a little self obsessed and completely clueless. But in Search Party… okay, she’s still kind of the worst. But she’s also the best.
She’s fun and hilarious and you wouldn’t want to leave the house without her arm in arm, by your side.

Julian (Brandon Michael Hall)
Our brooding, mysterious ex-boyfriend of Dory’s is one of the more fascinating elements of this new millennium’s Scooby gang even though he’s a little removed. He’s grounded and together, he manages to be a calming influence of some of the more outrageous inclinations and actions of the group even when they’re directed at him. The dude is chill AF and someone the group desperately needs close at hand.

Elliott Goss (John Early)
Save the best till last. If you had to choose one BFF from this list. It should be Elliott. Is he too social media obsessed? Yes. Is he self obsessed? Yes. Does he talk way too loud, way too often and only about himself? Yes, again, to all three. But damn son. The boy is fierce. He’s wet your pants funny and he’s got your back.So meet some new friends tonight. Check out Search Party and get in on the hunt.
