Letterkenny
Rural Canada, a town called Letterkenny. Three gangs, plenty of fist fights, filmed in slow-motion. Hilarity ensues. Trust us. From creators Jared Keeso and Jacob Tierney, who also star, this is one weird wonderful ride through small-town Ontario.
An entire Letterkenny box set is available to stream at SBS On Demand (with new seasons dropping every month), or catch double episodes weekly on SBS Viceland from 9.30pm Tuesdays, after South Park. Speaking of which...
South Park
Creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker share one helluva longstanding creative relationship, now into their 23rd season of South Park. While they’re no strangers to controversy – the of one of the episodes earlier this year being the latest – they stay true to their muse, and thank goodness for that.
Catch it on SBS VICELAND Monday 21 October at 9:30pm.
Final Space
Billed as a sci-fi comedy, Olan Rogers and David Sacks’ animated series centres on Gary, who was a Captain and is now a prisoner who hasn’t accepted his fate. Lonely for his old life, and lonely in general, he latches onto a mysterious alien who he dubs Mooncake, which soon threatens both their lives. The relationship between the monotone narrator, who delivers harsh truths in real time, and Gary’s wildly expressive self brings the humour. The series also has surprising emotional depth.
New Girl
When Zooey Deschanel’s Jess discovers her live-in boyfriend with another woman, she moves in with Nick, freshly dumped himself, Schmidt, who can be a bit of a douche, and Coach, who’s lost when talking to women. With Jess’s best friend Cece, the five-some support each other through their tumultuous twenties. Binge all seven seasons of the lovable New Girl from creator Elizabeth Meriwether.
Wellington Paranormal
This New Zealand comedy is utterly unique. From the beautiful minds of Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement come police officers Minogue and O’Leary, tasked by Sergeant Maaka to combat increasing levels of paranormal activity. They protect the citizenry with varying levels of competence, all while offering deadpan straight-to-camera commentary in the series’ documentary style.
Get excited because season 2 is coming soon! Stay tuned for updates.
The Last Man On Earth
In a world in which a virus has wiped out most everyone, creator Will Forte stars as Phil Miller, an average Joe from Arizona. He copes with complete desolation, indulges in a touch of hedonism and realises he may just be all alone forever. Until other survivors show up, that is, starting with Kristen Schaal’s Carol, who has rather different ideas about how to handle their desperate circumstances.
Shrill
Based on her memoir, Lindy West created Shrill with Alexandra Rushfield and Aidy Bryant, who also plays the lead, Annie. Annie is many things: a burgeoning journalist, a wonderful friend, a dedicated lover, and a seeker. But most people see her weight and either ignore her or offer unsolicited insulting advice. She’s developed some seriously negative self-talk. As she retrieves her voice and begins to use it, her best friend Fran stands by her for the bumpy ride. With a strong script and supporting cast, Shrill is a must-see.
