Have you caught up with these new and returning series – and a special musical occasion! – recently landed at SBS On Demand?

Brassic - seasons 1-6

In rural Lancashire, Vinnie (series co-creator Joseph Gilgun) is the leader of the pack. Well, they’re more of a rabble than a pack, and Vinnie lives by himself in a cabin in the woods anyway, but when it comes to petty crime they’re the ones you call on to get the job done… until they inevitably bite off more than they can chew, and desperate times call for increasingly over-the-top measures.

The criminal capers might lure you in, but it doesn’t take long to warm to these lovable losers. Don’t let their brash exteriors fool you: Brassic is the kind of surprisingly warm-hearted character comedy it’s easy to lose yourself in, cheering on Vinnie and his crew even if their only real skill is finding ways to get in over their heads.

Six seasons of Brassic are streaming at SBS On Demand.

The Head s3

— Warning – the following paragraphs contain spoilers for season one —

Years ago, Dr Arthur Wilde (John Lynch) discovered a bacteria that devours CO2. It seems like the perfect way to combat climate change – so why does his every attempt to study it end in murder? Season three sees Wilde in prison (in flashback), while Dr. Maggie Mitchell (Katharine O'Donnelly) is now involved in the latest bacteria study, now being held in an abandoned military base in the middle of the desert. Uh-oh.

Those familiar with the previous seasons (seasons 1 and 2 are also available at SBS On Demand) know all too well that isolated locations and Dr Wilde’s discovery are a recipe for death and disaster. This combination of murder mystery and high-tech horror has been a fan favourite from the beginning; with this season set to be the last, it’s time to finally get some answers.

All three seasons of The Head are streaming at SBS On Demand.

Showtrial - seasons 1 and 2

Mixing police procedurals and courtroom drama, this is a searing look at the machinations of UK justice from all angles. Each season follows a (fictional) high profile case touching on a range of hot button issues, with the action inside the courtroom and out providing a steady stream of surprise twists and shock revelations.

Season one sees the fallout from the death of a working-class student at an elite university, while season two covers the death of a climate change activist who, with his dying breath, accuses a police officer of murder. Will justice be done, or will the system find a way to protect their own?

Both seasons of Showtrial are streaming at SBS On Demand.

Jimmy Carr's Big Fat Quiz of the Year

Whether 2024 was a year to celebrate or one to forget, there’s still one more tradition left before shutting the door on it for good: Jimmy Carr's Big Fat Quiz of the Year.

This holiday institution (now in its twentieth year) is firmly traditional in format: two teams, three comedians each, answering questions about the year that was. But with the cream of the UK’s robust comedy quiz comedians on board (including the always reliable Richard Ayoade), and an entire year’s worth of news to work with, the result is reliably hilarious – and if you somehow missed out on the big developments of the year, it’s a handy way to get caught up before starting 2025.

Big Fat Quiz of the Year 2024 is streaming at SBS On Demand.

Miss Fallaci

Oriana Fallaci (played by Miriam Leone) would go on to become one of the most influential and controversial female journalists of the 20th century. But for now it’s the 1950s, and she’s stuck writing about movies, dreaming of the day she’ll step up to politics. In a field too often dismissed as shallow and superficial, her controversial portraits of the stars stood out – and made her a force to be reckoned with.

A whirlwind look behind the scenes of old-school Hollywood as seen through the eyes of a thoroughly modern woman, it’s a story where personal politics clash with a powerful media machine as well as the demands of her own tumultuous personal life. Above all, she’s determined to tell the truth as she sees it: can she find her own voice when her male dominated profession and the stars she speaks to just want more of the same?

Daddy Issues

Gemma (Aimee Lou Wood) likes to party like there’s no tomorrow – only tomorrow has just arrived with a thud. She’s pregnant from a mile-high club adventure with a TV-ad-quoting loser who’s vanished, and her options have narrowed down to one: get her dad (David Morrisey), who’s not exactly a symbol of mature stability himself, in as her flatmate.

Their struggles are both hilarious and sharply observed, as the pair deal with the dramas unique to parenthood whether you’re in your twenties or twenty years older. It’s a smart character-based comedy with something to say… though sometimes the message is just “maybe get some smarter mates”.

The Turkish Detective

Detective Suleyman (Ethan Kai) has returned to his childhood home of Istanbul after building a career as a detective in the UK, for reasons that he’d like to keep to himself for now. And what better place for a man with a secret to hide than amongst the local police, joining the squad run by veteran detective Ikmen (Haluk Bilginer) to tackle a series of extremely twisty mysteries.

An interesting location, crimes that will keep you guessing right to the end, and the kind of detective who might seem to be well past his prime but secretly sharp as a tack (that’d be Ikmen); what more could you ask for in a mystery series?
