NITV is serving up something never seen before on Australian television screens with the premiere of the first all-Indigenous breakfast show, Big Mob Brekky.
The hour of laughs, news, music and more will air at 7.30am every morning from Monday 9 November to Friday 13 November, filmed live at Taronga Zoo with crosses to locations across Australia – and hosts Shahni Wellington (NITV political correspondent) and Ryan Liddle (NITV journalist/host/broadcaster) can’t wait!
We want all Australians to start each day in NAIDOC week hearing voices from our communities.
The Guide grabbed the pair to chat about what we can look forward to on Big Mob Brekky.
Is this going to mean a REALLY early start to the day for you?
Ryan: Yeah it sure is! The alarms are all set for about 4 in the morning, so I’ll definitely be hitting the hay early all next week!
Shahni: We’ll be on your screens bright and early at 7:30am, live from Cammeraygal Country at Taronga Zoo – we’ll leave you to do the maths!
What we can look forward to in the show?
Shahni: Feel-good fun, fab feeds and so many laughs! We’ll be chatting to mob from every corner of the country all while bringing news and entertainment to your screens.
Ryan: Laughter above all else! Given what we’ve got in store between comedy, cooking, entertainment and music we’re going to have a blast. Shahni and I are looking forward to really getting people going in the morning, to start their day off with a smile, but also throw in a bit of education as well.

What points of difference are you looking forward to, with an Indigenous-led morning TV show?
Shahni: We’re looking to shake up the everyday breakfast TV experience for viewers. We’ll be bringing all the essentials of a good brekky show, but from an Indigenous perspective. We want all Australians to start each day in NAIDOC week hearing voices from our communities.
Ryan: I think we all know that we never get to see this sort of representation on morning telly. I think Big Mob Brekky has come at the right time – in 2020 we want to see more Indigenous representation in the mainstream sector and this show will be a good example of that.
How exciting is it to be part of an Australian TV first?
Shahni: It’s a massive honour!
Ryan: It’s mad! I’m really excited! There’s a first time for everything and it’ll be good to shake up a sector which could do with a bit of diversification. Bring it on!
Can you tell us about some of the people who’ll be making an appearance on Big Mob Brekky?
Ryan: We’re really excited to have the deadly Elaine Crombie joining us daily for wellness sessions and of course Steve ‘Mungindi Moment’ Ellis with his cooking segments.
Shahni: We also have some big-name panellists joining us through the week – Mitch Tambo, Emma Donovan, to name a few!
And there’s a big array of Indigenous talent behind the scenes too?

Ryan: That’s right! We wouldn’t be here without the hard work of our entire team.
Shahni: Big Mob Brekky has an entirely Blak editorial team, which I think will be reflected in the awesome content we have planned for our viewers.
