She might look cute but this toy dog is able to deliver some harsh home truths.

'Hana-chan' has been designed to sniff your feet and tell you if they smell bad.

If the odour is particularly offensive, she will faint.

The 15cm pup is the invention of Japanese company Next Technology, who designed the robot in response to a request from a man who was keen to know if he had a problem, the reports.

"He told us his daughter had said his feet were smelly," Next Technology employee Kimika Tsuji says.

"But he didn't want to know how bad the odour was because he would feel hurt.

"That's why we developed this cute robot."
Named Hana-chan - a play on the Japanese word for 'nose' and a common girl's nickname' - the dog is equipped with an odour detection sensor in its nose.

If the smell is unbearable, Hana-chan will even spray some air freshener to deal with the problem.

Next Technology hope to start selling the robot dog early next year, but peace of mind won't come cheap - the price tag is expected to top 100,000 yen (A$1,142).
