Sporty Spice said 'trans rights'!
Melanie Chisholm, better known as Melanie C or Sporty Spice, has revealed how shocked she was to learn about the levels of hate crime and systemic prejudice faced by members of the trans community in the UK.
Speaking to , the former girl group member said she learned a lot about the trans experience while touring with queer drag collective Sink the Pink.
“I mean, Jesus Christ, can you imagine growing up feeling like you’re in the wrong body?” She said in the wide-ranging interview.
“We have to move on. Things change."
She continued: “Thank goodness people are able to be who they truly feel they are rather than living miserable lives or secret lives.
“It’s something that has to be acknowledged and addressed.”
It's not the first time the Spice Girl has spoken out in solidarity of trans and non-binary people.
Earlier this year, the singer hit pause on her set at Brighton Pride in the UK to deliver a moving speech about transgender rights.
Holding a large trans flag, Melanie C told the crowd: “I’ve learned a lot about myself and one of the things I’ve never expected to do was to find more acceptance for every single part of me, so I thank you for that.”
She continued: “I’ve been proudly holding the Pride flag everywhere I go, very proudly. But tonight, I’ve been given by one of my dancers, this very special flag, and I’m going to be holding this tonight when I sing my next song.
“This is a flag that we don’t see often enough. This is a flag we want to see a lot more of. This is for trans and non-binary [people].”
She added: “Every part of the Pride community is very important, so tonight, I’m sharing this. We all need, we all deserve, and we all should have love.”
