Writer, director and producer Ryan Murphy has announced that he'll be donating 100 per cent of his profits from upcoming series Pose, which explores the New York City ballroom culture made famous in the classic documentary Paris Is Burning.
Murphy, who created Glee, has already received praise for the show's inclusive cast and crew, which includes "the most trans series regular actors ever" in an American TV series.
Taking to social media last week, Murphy said he would be donating his profits towards "trans and LGBTQ charitable organisations" who "do amazing work and need our support".
He continued: "Every day for the next 14 days I will highlight a group I'm supporting, and encourage you to do the same."
“We’ve entered this area of television as advocacy,” the producer Variety, “and I’ve seen the difference you can make in people’s lives by showing up for them, caring for them, and helping them in any way that you can.”
He continued: “The thing that struck me in talking to so many of them, was how much they’ve struggled, how under attack they feel, how many of them find it difficult getting healthcare, and finding jobs."
“I just decided I need to do more than just making a show for this community. I want to reach out and help this community.”
“My eyes have really been opened to the great work being done in a lot of these organisations, and these people are in the shadows and they need our support,” he said.
He added that his goal was to double each charity's average annual donations.
“The struggle is real and it’s not getting easier.”
