Jennifer Lopez is being praised for her use of gender neutral pronouns in an Instagram post about her sister Leslie’s child.
"This is Brendan my sister Leslie's second child!!" Lopez writes in the caption.
"They were the one person selected to represent their school at in Washington DC!!! And I couldn't be more proud!!! Brendan is strong and smart and loving and a obviously a leader!! Titi Jenn loves you!!"
Many of the star’s followers were quick to applaud her use of gender-neutral language such as “they” and “person” when describing Brendan.
One Instagram user wrote: “I'm legit crying those pronouns made me so happy. Thanks for sharing this and congrats Brendan!!”
Another said: ”jlo respecting her sisters kids pronouns i love this concept.”
“Thank you so much for being so rad about pronouns, J. I love you,” wrote one fan.
The post also attracted negative comments and some from people who were genuinely confused. Luckily, members of JLo’s fan base were more than happy to educate other users.
User wrote: " she put "they" because brendan is a non-binary person, it's a preferred gender pronoun :)"
Another Instagram user said their teenager helped them out on understanding gender-neutral pronouns.
“Congrats Brendan! I totally get it now, first I thought it was a typo, but my 14 year old enlighted me. Takes time to catch up 😆.”
In one heartwarming caption, a young woman tagged her transgender sibling, writing: "Do you notice anything about the caption ❤❤❤ Lil bro the world is changing and we're living in it as it does. I love you."
A Human Rights Campaign said Lopez “showed love for her sister’s child, respecting their pronouns and sending a message of support across the internet.”
