New streaming platform Disney Plus recently launched a non-scripted series called Marvel’s Hero Project, which takes everyday young people and highlights their own superpowers - celebrating the ways they make a difference in their day-to-day lives.
Then, in a really cute twist, they turn the young person into an actual superhero, complete with comic book artwork and everything.
In one episode, we're introduced to 12-year-old New Jersey local Rebekah. Now, Rebekah really is a superhero. After coming out as trans at 8-years-old, the student and her family have been fighting for change at a local level, with Rebekah even appearing before the New Jersey legislature to lobby for Assembly Bill 1335, a law change that would help bring LGBTIQ+ history lessons into public schools in the area.
“I’ve never seen myself in the history they’re teaching," Rebekah told legislators, according to , with New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy signing the bill into law in February of this year (the new lessons are set to begin in 2020).
And with that, Marvel's latest superhero, Mighty Rebekah, was born.
After watching Rebekah's episode of Marvel's Hero Project, New Jersey Gov. Murphy took to social media to celebrate the 12-year-old on all she's achieved.

"With your compassionate advocacy and boundless strength, you’re building a brighter future for LGBTIQ+ kids. Keep changing the world."
Speaking to , Rebekah said she cherishes her new position as a role model for young trans people.
"It feels really cool to be someone who can help other kids going through their own transitions and also just amazing to be that kind of person to support others and show that trans kids are just like any other kids.
And Mighty Rebekah's superpower?
"I think my power is acceptance because I accept everyone for their differences and I can empower and tell other people... that everyone is the same and there's nothing wrong with LGBTIQ+ kids."
