Actor Mara Wilson was recently featured as a guest on the podcast , where she spoke about being fed up with the way bisexual characters are portrayed on TV and in films.
Wilson chatted with hosts James Cooper, Alice Levine and Jamie Morton in a ‘Footnotes’ episode of the podcast—where they discuss the latest chapter of Belinda Blinks—the erotic fiction series written by Morton’s father, Rocky Flintstone.
After talking about common misconceptions about people who identify as bisexual, she said: “I have been arguing that we need more boring bisexual representation.”
“Because a lot of [bisexual] people are villains, they’re evil or they’re super sexy and I’m just sitting here drinking tea and just trying to get my cats to come over,” she said.
Wilson said that being bisexual does not mean that she finds “everybody attractive”.
“For some people, they find more people attractive but I’m still picky so it just means there’s more than one gender that I’m bad at dating.”
Wilson—who made a cameo appearance in Broad City last year—said she made a connection recently about some of her acting peers as a child.
“I realised that all of the actresses that I went out on parts with—people like Kristin Stewart, Alia Shawkat and Evan Rachel Wood—all of us went out for each other’s parts and we all looked different but I looked back and was like, we all ended up being either gay or bisexual.
“Casting directors know what they’re doing!”
Mara Wilson opened up about her sexuality following the Orlando massacre, saying that while she used to identify as straight but has "been embracing "the Bi/Queer label lately".
