Popular TV series Gossip Girl is being rebooted by HBO Max, with previews promising a much more diverse - if not still young and rich - slate of characters.
Filming for the series started in New York City last week, with the show's cast photographed sitting on the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. While details are scarce, showrunner and executive producer Joshua Safran confirmed there would be greater LGBTIQ+ representation than the original series.
"How much homoeroticism can I expect from it?" one fan tweeted Safran.
"Well, considering we have many queer characters, a lot?" Safran, who was also a writer on the original Gossip Girl, responded.
While it's not yet clear who is playing who, the reboot stars actors Jordan Alexander, Emily Alyn Lind, Whitney Peak, Thomas Doherty, Zion Moreno, Eli Brown, Evan Mock, and Savannah Smith.
“There was not a lot of representation the first time around on the show.” Safran said in a panel discussion last year, adding: “I was the only gay writer I think the entire time I was there.”
"This time around the leads are nonwhite," he continued.
"There’s a lot of queer content on this show. It is very much dealing with the way the world looks now, where wealth and privilege come from, and how you handle that. The thing I can’t say is there is a twist, and that all relates to the twist.”
