NBL star Goulding reveals how Melbourne move kickstarted his career

NBL superstar Chris Goulding has revealed how his move to the Melbourne Tigers in 2012 was a major turning point that kickstarted his professional career, during the latest episode of SBS Series - TAB Courtside 1v1.

WATCH TAB Courtside 1v1 on SBS with Megan Hustwaite weekly on Thursday from 7pm (AEDT) via , or catch up via .

Melbourne United sharpshooter Goulding has seen it all during his incredible 15-year career in the NBL and the 32-year-old isn’t slowing down anytime soon.

After breaking through with the Brisbane Bullets in 2006, Goulding has since gone on to win two NBL titles, has been crowned NBL Finals MVP and in 2014 took the honour of NBL Scoring Champion.

A member of the Boomers squad at the 2016 Rio Olympics, Goulding also won gold as a member of Australia’s Commonwealth Games team in 2018.
The man known around the league as CG43 told TAB Courtside 1v1 host Megan Hustwaite of his pride in being able to wear the Melbourne Tigers jersey and how it was the platform to help him take his game to a new level.

“My childhood memories of watching the NBL were always games involving the Kings, the Bullets and the Melbourne Tigers - so to get the opportunity to wear that jersey was something I was really proud of,” Goulding said.

“I remember looking up into the rafters and seeing the retired jerseys of so many legends of the game who had played for the club and no doubt inspired many other young players like myself.

“Even though I had been in the league for a while, it was my first real opportunity to play significant minutes in the NBL and I thank the Tigers for giving me that break in my career.”

Goulding admitted the decision to rebrand the Tigers as Melbourne United in 2014 was a controversial call, but one he felt was a necessary move.

“The name change was a controversial topic at that point in time. Rightly so, there were a lot of long time fans of the club and former players who were not happy with the decision at all,” he said.

“At that time we were playing at the State Netball Centre and struggled to attract more than 2000 fans to the games. In my mind it wasn’t sustainable and something had to be done to attract new fans.

“It was very noticeable the support for the team building after we moved to Hisense Arena with crowds building and getting bigger by the week.

“Obviously it was tough for the Tigers fans who felt their team had been taken away from them, but I think the success of Melbourne United is proof it was the right decision.”

In the full interview with Hustwaite, Goulding opens up on the building rivalry with South East Melbourne Phoenix, why his star teammate Jock Landale is so unique and his new project which he hopes sets him up for life after basketball.
The interview is part of an SBS series - TAB Courtside 1v1, which gives fans a chance to get to know more about the unique personalities from the NBA, WNBA, NBL and WNBL, which help shape basketball in Australia.

Hustwaite, who has been covering all levels of Australian basketball for the past 13 years as a reporter, commentator and journalist, will helm the weekly show – every Thursday at 7 pm (AEDT) via  - where she interviews stars of the past, present and future.

SBS will again broadcast multiple regular-season NBA games per week in HD on SBS VICELAND and streamed live via SBS On Demand. Plus, every game of the upcoming 2020-21 NBL season will be LIVE, FREE and in HD via SBS On Demand, with select games also live on SBS VICELAND.
