Turgis traverses the gravel for maiden Tour de France win

After 32 kilometres of white gravel roads caused chaos in the peloton, Anthony Turgis (TotalEnergies) won the sprint from the breakaway to win his first ever World Tour race in Stage 9 of the Tour de France.

The third Frenchman to have won a stage at this year's Tour de France after nine days of racing, Turgis' performance was his maiden World Tour win and team TotalEnergies' first at the French Grand Tour since 2017.

Despite numerous attacks and time gaps threatening, the top of the general classification remained unchanged, with Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) keeping the yellow jersey at the first rest day.

The Slovenian still leads by 33 seconds ahead of Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-QuickStep) and a minute and 15 seconds ahead of Jonas Vingegaard (Visma Lease-a-Bike).

There were big attacks by both Evenepoel and Pogacar in the stage, but both were followed by Vingegaard who wasn't prepared to try to stretch out any gaps on the peloton, meaning the moves ultimately led to nothing.
An early mechanical meant the Dane was forced to swap bikes with teammate Jan Tratnik, and didn't have the opportunity to get his own bike back for the rest of the stage with the team car unable to get to him.

Australian Michael Matthews (Jayco-AlUla) also turned in a notable performance on the day, finishing 10th on the stage from a chasing group that attempted, but ultimately failed to bridge across to the breakaway.

The Tour de France now enters its first rest day, before resuming on Tuesday night with Stage 10, a flat 187.3km route from Orleans to Saint-Amand-Montrond that presents another chance for the sprinters. Watch the action from 8:55pm (AEST) on SBS On Demand and the Tour Tracker app before SBS coverage begins from 9:30pm.
