The 2021 Tour de France on SBS: Stage-by-Stage

With the 2021 Tour de France just a week away now, here's a handy stage-by-stage guide to bring you up to speed on what awaits the peloton in this year's French grand tour.

Every moment of the 2021 Tour de France will be live on SBS, with the ŠKODA Tour Tracker app, SBS TV and the SBS Cycling Central the place to be to catch all the pulsating action from France from June 26 to July 18.

The beloved Tour de France promises another thrilling event filled with heart-stopping racing, incredible scenery and wild fans. This year's route brings something for everyone, with two individual time trials in Stages 5 and 20 as well as days for the fast-legged sprinters, gritty climbers and GC hopefuls!

Watch the riders cover each and every metre on SBS with commentary every night from Matt Keenan, Robbie McEwen, Bridie O'Donnell and David McKenzie. You can also watch and follow all the action on the SBS ŠKODA Tour Tracker App throughout the race, where the stream will start before the television feed in some cases.

Saturday June 26

1930 – 0130 (AEST) LIVE on SBS HD and SBS On Demand (Tour Tracker starts at 2000)

There will be no chance for the peloton to ease into the action on the opening stage of the Tour de France. Frequent changes in direction, crosswinds on the Monts d'Arrée and a summit finish atop the Côte de la Fosse aux Loups are sure to pose a big challenge!

Tour de France Stage 2 - Perros-Guirec to Mûr-de-Bretagne Guerlédan - 183.5km

Sunday June 27

2030 – 0200 (AEST) LIVE on SBS HD and SBS On Demand (Tour Tracker starts at 2100)

The double ascent of the Côte de Mûr-de-Bretagne looms as the first brutal test for the peloton at the tail end of the second stage, with a points bonus on offer early for the polka dot jersey hopefuls.

Tour de France Stage 3 - Lorient to Pontivy - 182.9km

Monday June 28

2030 – 0155 LIVE on SBS HD and SBS On Demand (Tour Tracker starts at 2100)

The first flat stage of the race will have the sprinters licking their lips, as they travel past the breathtaking Château des Rohan to what's sure to be an intense finish in Pontivy.

Tour de France Stage 4 - Redon to Fougères - 150.4km

Tuesday June 29

A shorter stage will provide some minor relief for the legs as the peloton make the journey through the Argoat region of inland Brittany on another day that will favour the sprinters. Some hilly roads through the forest and possible winds may complicate things though.

Tour de France Stage 5 - Changé to Laval Espace Mayenne - 27.2km - Individual Time Trial

Wednesday June 30

2030 – 0145 (AEST) LIVE on SBS HD and SBS On Demand (Live pictures start on the ŠKODA Tour Tracker before SBS HD at 2005)

A shake-up in this year's race with a long time trial in the first week, the riders will look to make up or gain some valuable seconds on rivals as they venture through Pays de la Loire.

Tour de France Stage 6 - Tours to Châteauroux - 160.6km

Thursday July 1

2130 – 0155 (AEST) LIVE on SBS HD and SBS On Demand (Tour Tracker starts at 2145)

Another flat stage punctuated by a single climb of the Côte De Saint-Aignan and some wonderful scenery, with renaissance castles dotted along the journey through the Val de Loire region. Expect another push from the sprinters to the finish in Châteauroux.

Tour de France Stage 7 - Vierzon to Le Creusot - 249.1km

Friday July 2

2030 – 0140 (AEST) LIVE on SBS HD and SBS On Demand (Live pictures start on the ŠKODA Tour Tracker before SBS HD at 1850) 

The sprinters will be out of the spotlight as the peloton take on the longest stage of the Tour de France in 21 years, a mammoth ride through the Morvan mountain ranges culminating in a gruelling ascent of the Signal d'Uchon to the finish.

Tour de France Stage 8 - Oyonnax to Le Grand-Bornand - 150.8km

Saturday July 3

2030 – 0140 on SBS HD and SBS On Demand (Tour Tracker starts at 2100)

It's go-time for the climbers as the race enters it's first mountainous stage, with the finish at Le Grand-Bornand following a battle up the Romme–Colombière. This time around though, the route will include a climb of the Mont-Saxonnex which means the riders will tackle three climbs in the space of 20 kilometres.

Tour de France Stage 9 - Cluses to Tignes - 144.9km

Sunday July 4

2030 – 0140 (AEST) LIVE on SBS HD and SBS On Demand (Tour Tracker starts at 2050)

Another mountainous stage to head into the first rest day, the peloton takes on the back-to-back challenges of the Col du Pré and the dazzling Cormet de Roselend before the winding final ascent of the Montée de Tignes.

Tour de France Stage 10 - Albertville to Valence - 190.7km

Tuesday July 6

2030 – 0150 (AEST) LIVE on SBS HD and SBS On Demand (Tour Tracker starts at 2055)

After a well-earned rest, the peloton continues through Albertville amongst the Savoie resorts towards the Alps. But this time the route changes tack, taking riders to the valleys of Isère and the Rhone and giving the sprinters another opportunity for valuable points.

Tour de France Stage 11 - Sorgues to Malaucène - 198.9km

Wednesday July 7

The Tour returns to the towering Mont Ventoux, known as the Giant of Provence for a brutal double climb followed by a descent to the finish.

Tour de France Stage 12 - Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux to Nîmes - 159.4km

Thursday July 8

A journey along the beautiful Gorges de l'Ardèche leads into a bunch sprint into the finish at Nîmes, where the fast riders will need to look out for crosswinds on the open roads.

Tour de France Stage 13 - Nîmes to Carcassonne - 219.9km

Friday July 9

A long stage where the scenery will serve as a backdrop to history, with the route showcasing the Roman arenas amongst the most well preserved in the world and the Cité de Carcassonne, a hulking fortress and UNESCO world heritage site.

Tour de France Stage 14 - Carcassonne to Quillan - 183.7km

Saturday July 10

2030 – 0120 (AEST) LIVE on SBS HD and SBS On Demand (Live pictures start on the ŠKODA Tour Tracker before SBS HD at 2015) 

The journey into the Pyrenees begins as the race ramps up with an ascent of the Col de Montségur or 'Citadel of Vertigo' followed by the Col de la Croix des Morts and Col de Saint-Louis in a stage that will whet the appetite of the climbers.

Tour de France Stage 15 - Céret to Andorre-La-Vieille - 191.3km

Monday July 11

A first-ever start in Céret leads into a multitude of tricky climbs headlined by the Port d'Envalira in a day sure to decide the real King of the Mountains.

Tuesday July 13

A hilly stage that looks to favour breakaway riders still fresh following the previous day's rest, the Col de Port and Col de la Core will test the legs before the finish in Saint-Gaudens.

Tour de France Stage 17 - Muret to Saint-Lary-Soulan - 178.4km

Wednesday, July 14

2030 – 0130 (AEST) LIVE on SBS HD and SBS On Demand (Tour Tracker starts at 1945)

The peloton takes on the Pyrenees from a different angle on stage 17. The first 100km is relatively flat before the major climbs of Peyresourde, Val Louron-Azet and Col Du Portet push the riders to their limits. It is a stage which will take big efforts and is set to be quite a show.

Thursday, July 15

Another huge day in the mountains with the monstrous Hors Categorie climbs of the Tourmalet and Luz Ardiden set to push the riders to their limit. This is a day for the climbers and a brilliant chance to make up time in the general classification.

Friday, July 16

The sprinters have their chance to shine after five days in the mountains with a predominately flat "Landes Stage".

A bunched sprint could be on the cards, but after days of toil in the high country will the speed merchants have enough in the tank to power to the line on this 207km stage.

The battle for the yellow jersey comes down to this with a thrilling individual time-trial through a prestigious vineyard setting on what is the Tour's penultimate stage.

Sunday, July 18

2300 – 0400 (AEST) LIVE on SBS HD and SBS On Demand (Tour Tracker starts at 0005)

After three weeks and 21 stages, the Tour de France comes to an end with the traditional procession into Paris and the final finish line on the Champs-Élysées. While the yellow jersey would've been decided 24 hours earlier, the sprinter's green jersey could still be up for grabs ahead of one final thrilling bunch sprint.
