Sagan will join the French ProTeam at the end of the year, bringing an end to his time with Bora-Hansgrohe.
The second year of the 31-year-old’s contract will coincide with the next terms for three-year WorldTour licenses to become available – something they may look to explore.
TotalEnergies’ newest signing has had an incredible career thus far, including seven green jerseys at the Tour de France, and revealed he did not hesitate to make the move.
“You know, when I joined Bora-Hansgrohe at the end of 2016, it was a small team,” Sagan told L’Equipe.
“In a few years, everything has changed, and it has become one of the biggest structures of the WorldTour.
“What I mean is that I’ve been there before.
“The most important thing is not the current status of the team but what we are going to do with it.
“The fact that TotalEnergies is not in the WorldTour today is not a problem for me.
“I want to help make it a great team.”
Sagan was forced to pull out of this year’s Tour de France after injuring his knee in a sprint crash prior to Stage 12.
The damage and subsequent surgery brought an end to his Olympic hopes and it remains to be seen when he will return to racing in 2021.
“This new adventure is very exciting,” Sagan said during his official announcement.
“Jean-Rene (Bernaudeau) is a manger who wants to change the lines in the world of cycling. I hope to be able to help this team to achieve it, and to win many races under these new colours.
“For now, of course, I remain focused on end-of-season goals with my current team, and I will join my new squad with a winning spirit this winter!”
