Race intensifying to sign Socceroos star Rogic

The race to sign Australia star Tom Rogic, who has been linked in reports with Arsenal, is intensifying with clubs in Europe and Asia understood to have joined the likes of Reading and Sheffield Wednesday in the battle to land the Celtic playmaker.

With just over a year of his Parkhead contract to run after a breakthrough season, which has brought 10 goals in 38 games, Rogic is free to negotiate with clubs on 1 January 2017.

He could be acquired for as little as $3 million, with his four-year deal running down, but Rogic and the newly crowned Scottish champions remain no closer to a resolution on contract extension talks, which began in November.

The impasse has fuelled speculation that he will soon be on his way, much to the angst of Hoops fans who have come they realise they have a magician in their midst.

Some of the most ardent interest is coming from the cashed up Chinese Super League, where at least two clubs have made it clear they will be happy to let the 23 year-old's contract expire before plucking him up on a multi-million dollar package.

Rogic's future could even turn on how he performs in front of a bevy of scouts when the Socceroos take on England in the glamour international on 28 May (AEST).

The scorer of Celtic's goal of the season, and one of the seven against Motherwell at the weekend, Rogic has been a revelation for club and country of late, much to the delight of departing Bhoys boss Ronny Deila and Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou.

While the interest from Championship side Reading, whose boss Brian McDermott is an avid admirer, and Sheffield Wednesday is being taken seriously, Rogic's final destination could be far loftier.

That said, it's believed the prospect of him joining the Gunners next season is looking remote.
