The two-time Tour de France champion hatched a plan with teammate Adam Yates as the group of favourites wound their way up the final climb of the day, which saw Yates go up the road and act as a satellite rider, giving Pogacar a launch pad for his own attack that followed.
Once the Slovenian bridged to Yates, it was all over, Pogacar surging ahead and widening the gap with each pedal stroke to the chasing Vingegaard and Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-QuickStep), eventually crossing the line 39 seconds before his Danish rival and a minute and 10 seconds ahead of the Belgian in a triumphant win, his second so far in the race.

“The plan was to win the stage in the final sprint and try to get a few bonus seconds, but winning like this is way better!" Pogacar said after the stage.
"We found ourselves in an ideal scenario. Adam’s attack put me in a situation in which I could attack, following my instinct. It’s because of the excellent work of my teammates that I’ve done this, and I’m thankful to all of them.
"The situation in the GC is definitely better now than it was before the stage, but you never know how things will end up. There is a long way to go until Nice. The real mountain stages just started today!"
Also taking bonus seconds on offer for the stage victory, Pogacar's monster effort gives him 43 more seconds over Vingegaard in the race for the yellow jersey, his total lead now a minute and 57 seconds with another huge mountain test to come tomorrow.
Evenepoel struggled mightily to follow both former champions, conceding a further 25 seconds in the general classification to drop from second to third, now trailing Pogacar by two minutes and 22 seconds.
Australia's best placed rider on the day was Chris Harper (Jayco-AlUla) who was 19th across the line, whilst Jack Haig (Bahrain Victorious) was 42nd and Jai Hindley (Red Bull BORA-Hansgrohe) was 50th.
The Tour de France continues tonight with another mammoth mountain stage, 197.7km from Loudenvielle to Plateau de Beille which features 4,800 metres of vertical gain. Watch the action from 7:45pm (AEST) on SBS On Demand and the Tour Tracker app, before coverage on SBS begins from 8:30pm.
