Post race, the 25-year-old revealed extensive preparation for the climb and great execution from his UAE Team Emirates teammates set up the brilliant win.

“It was like a dream stage. This was the plan and we executed it perfectly,” Pogacar said.

“I wanted to hit hard today. I know this stage really well, I’ve been training here a lot recently so it felt like a home stage.

“My legs felt good from the start so I thought why not, lets go for it.”

Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) was the only rider to match Pogacar’s initial acceleration 800 metres from the top of the climb, and although the Dane was distanced on the final ramps of the climb, he put up fierce resistance, cresting the summit just eight seconds down.

Pogacar’s superior descending skills took centre stage as he stretched his lead over Vingegaard, who was caught by Primoz Roglič (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe), Evenepoel (Soudal-QuickStep), Carlos Rodríguez (Ineos Grenadiers) and Juan Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates) in the final kilometres before the finish.

Pogacar takes the yellow jersey from Richard Carapaz who was unable to match the pace of UAE Team Emirates before being dropped with 25 kilometres to go on the stage.

Stage 5 could be a chance for the sprinters to take centre stage as the riders take on a 177km route to Saint Vulbas. Watch the action LIVE from 9:10pm (AEST) on SBS On Demand and the SKODA Tour Tracker with coverage on SBS from 9:20pm (AEST).
