Mills was in outstanding form throughout the Games and saved his best performance for the Bronze medal match, scoring 42 points as the Aussies beat Slovenia 107-93 to claim third place in Tokyo.
The point guard will play for the Brooklyn Nets in the upcoming NBA season - LIVE, FREE and in HD on SBS VICELAND and SBS On Demand - after moving from the San Antonio Spurs.
Speaking from hotel quarantine in Sydney, Mills said Australia's basketball Olympics achievement is far and away the proudest sporting moment of his career so far.
"Being able to represent my country, Australia - in the green and gold as a Kokatha, Naghiralgal, Duaureb-Meriam man - through my sport in basketball, there isn't a moment that I've felt more proud on the sporting field," Mills said.
In his fourth Olympic games, Mills said the feeling of being able to finally create history for Australian men's basketball was something he will treasure for the rest of his life.
"To create history for our sport, in our country, in an Olympic games where I had the opportunity to be the flag bearer, all these things combine together to make it the single most proud moment in my basketball journey," he said.
"But to understand that feeling, it's everything that's happened off the court. The gratitude that I have for my family, extended family, friends and everyone that's helped me to this point, is why I can say that."
