The 25-year-old was filled with pride when reflecting on her accomplishments, saying: “a couple of weeks ago I was nostalgic for an exceptional and unique year, but starting out this year collecting this award, I feel very proud.”
“I owe this to Barca, to the national team, I owe it to the great season that we’ve played,” she added.
“I’d like to thank my teammates, without all of you I wouldn’t be here. I’d also like to say I am proud to be part of a powerful generation of women who are changing the game and the world.”
Messi’s victory, meanwhile, was less clear-cut, having pipped Manchester City’s Erling Haaland to the award despite being tied on 48 points.
According to FIFA’s scoring system, the Argentina star triumphed based on the number of votes cast by his fellow national team captains.
In the other awards handed out on the night, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola was named the best men’s coach, with England’s Sarina Wiegman claiming the women’s equivalent; while Mary Earps and Ederson were credited with being the best women’s and men’s goalkeepers, respectively.
Brazil legend Marta also received a lifetime achievement award and Botafogo-SP’s Guilherme Madruga won the FIFA Puskas Award for the best men’s goal.
