Lotto Soudal 'overachieved' at the 2020 Tour de France: Ewan

While Caleb Ewan found himself too far back and boxed in during the final sprint on the Champs-Élysées, the Australian said Lotto Soudal 'overachieved' at the 2020 Tour de France.

Ewan said the team was overwhelmed on the approach to the iconic final straight with just five Lotto Soudal men remaining, seventh place all he could manage with Sam Bennett (Deceuninck-QuickStep) sealing his green jersey with a win on the Champs-Élysées.

The team lost Philippe Gilbert and John Degenkolb on Stage 1, Gilbert abandoning after a crash and the German finishing outside the time limit also due to a bingle, and Stef Cras a DNF on Stage 9.

"Like I've said before," Ewan said after the final stage. "This is sprinting and sometimes you win and sometimes you lose and next time we will do it better. We will analyse what went wrong and next time we will get it right.

"It was just we had limited guys so we had to take a bit more risk, you know sit in the wheels a little bit more."

"And when you take those risks then sometimes you get swamped sometimes you get boxed in and that's what happened today and we got a little bit boxed in and we couldn't get in soon enough."
But the New South Welshman said the 2020 Tour de France was still a successful one for him and Lotto Soudal.

"Overall we can look back at the Tour as a good one. Two stage wins. My fifth win for the team in the Tour.

"So I think we've done a really good job especially we were down to six guys from the start and then five guys after a few more days.

"I think we overachieved for what we had here."
