Andreeva saves match point as Kooyong trio storm into Australian Open fourth round

2024 Kooyong Classic champions - Jannik Sinner and Mirra Andreeva - along with 15th-seeded Karen Khachanov stormed into the Australian Open fourth round on Friday afternoon (AEDT).

16-year-old Andreeva has produced some supreme tennis at Melbourne Park - headlined by a 6-0, 6-2 victory over three-time grand slam finalist, Ons Jabeur in the third round on Wednesday.

But the Russian teen didn't have it all her own way in the round of 16 clash two days later, and needed a miraculous comeback from 1-5 down in the third set to progress.
Andreeva saved a match point on the way to claiming a dramatic 1-6, 6-1, 7-6(5) win over France's Diane Parry to send the court 3 crowd at Melbourne Park into raptures.

The current world number 47's success at the Australian Open has come off the back of a quarter-final appearance at the Brisbane International, before she was crowned Kooyong Classic champion last week after defeating 2022 Australian Open finalist, Danielle Collins 7-6(5), 6-1.

"Honestly, overall it was a crazy match for me. In the third set, I didn't expect to come back, but I did it, so I'm very happy," Andreeva said in her post-match press conference on Friday.

When told that three-time grand slam champion, and fellow Kooyong Classic player, Andy Murray tweeted about her result, the 16-year-old said: "I didn't think that he would watch my match, then after, he would tweet ... Honestly, I will try to print it out somehow. I will put it in a frame."
Meanwhile, in the men's draw - Sinner and Khachanov have now locked in a blockbuster fourth round clash at Melbourne Park after they both progressed on Friday.

Sinner, 22, has continued his supreme form - reaching the round of 16 without dropping a set, the first time he has done so at a grand slam since the 2020 French Open.

In fact, the Italian has only conceded a measly 22 games in three straight-set victories at the 2024 Australian Open.

26th-seed Sebastian Baez was Sinner's latest victim with a 6-0, 6-1, 6-3 thrashing, which comes after Sinner won the Kooyong Classic last week following victories over three-time grand slam finalist, Casper Ruud and Australia's Marc Polmans.
The Italian is highly fancied to give this year's Australian Open a major shake after finishing last season in brilliant form - including two victories over Novak Djokovic, one of which helping Italy to their first Davis Cup title since 1976 by defeating Australia in the final.

But Sinner will now face fellow Kooyong Classic player Khachanov, after the Russian won his third four-set match in succession on Friday - this time proving too good for Tomas Machac 6-4, 7-6(4), 4-6, 7-6(5).

"We do play a little bit similar. We love to play with rhythm. Physically we both are good movers. He has improved a lot. Also his serve has improved," Sinner said of Khachanov.

“I do feel confident, no? I came here with a good off-season [and] preparation … I'm just quite focused and also relaxed on the court at the moment.”
While Khachanov, 27, lost a tight match to world number 8, Holger Rune at the Kooyong Classic, the hit-out has held him in good stead ahead of his Australian Open tilt.

Despite entering Sunday's round of 16 clash as the underdog against Sinner, Khachanov has been a proven performer at Melbourne Park - including a semi-final appearance last year.
Sinner holds a 2-1 head-to-head lead over Khachanov, but the duo's last clash was almost three years ago in Miami.

Meanwhile, Andreeva will face the winner of 2021 French Open champion Barbora Krejčíková and Australia's Storm Hunter, who will battle it out on Rod Laver Arena on Friday night.

But one thing's for sure - the 2024 Kooyong Classic has certainly held the trio of Andreeva, Sinner and Khachanov in good stead for their battles ahead.
