Injury toll confirmed after crashes in Lombardia ravine

The dicey corner on the descent of the Muro di Sormano in Saturday's Giro di Lombardia felled four riders, but it seems Jans Bakelants (AG2R Mondiale) and Simone Petilli (UAE Team Emirates) fared the worst.

Of the four crashes into the same ravine, just that of Laurens De Plus (QuickStep Floors) was spectacularly captured on camera.

According to a team statement, De Plus escaped without major injury but underwent examinations at the Cantù hospital. Team Wilier Triestina - Selle Italia confirmed similar news via Twitter for Daniel Martinez:
But UAE Team Emirates rider Simone Petilli and Jans Bakelants came off the worst.

Petilli was transferred to a hospital in Varese, the team confirming he suffered a concussion, a fracture of the right occipital condyle (base of the skull), a fracture of the right tranverse process of the D1 vertebra, a broken right collarbone and broken right shoulder blade. And to top it all off, he also suffered wounds near the right eye.

AG2R Mondiale confirmed Jans Bakelants suffered a similar amount of injury after examination at a Como hospital with seven rib fractures, and a fracture-compaction of the first lumbar vertebra and the third lumbar vertebra.
