That’s the verdict of Rangers and Socceroos great Craig Moore, whose affiliation with the club he made over 150 appearances for over two spells still runs deep.
The former Light Blues skipper believes the arrival in Glasgow of Gerrard, the current Anfield under-18s coach and high on the short-list to replace stop-gap solution Graeme Murty next season, might accelerate the clubs’s journey back to parity with eternal rivals Celtic.
“Of course there’s an element of risk (in choosing a coaching novice) but Rangers are maybe at a stage now where something a little bit different is called for,” declared Moore.
“Steven Gerrard was an unbelievable player who showed fantastic loyalty to Liverpool in his career.
“He’s the type of character people would be desperate to play for.
“Of course he lacks top level experience - but sometimes it just works for the right of calibre of person.
“The principles of how he’s gone about his life are impeccable, And he’s a born winner, which is very important.”
UEFA Champions League winner Gerrard, 37, carries a mystique, which Moore reckons would also be a telling factor with Rangers supporters.
With the club seeking to nail down second spot in the Scottish Premiership behind champions elect Celtic, they are still a long way from resurrecting the glory days of 54 domestic league titles, the last of which was in 2010-2011.
And Gerrard, who is deep in discussions over the top job according to multiple reports from Scotland, has in Moore’s estimation a near perfect profile to take up the challenge.
“The way he has carried himself as a player, the respect he demands, and the way he speaks ... for me he’s the ultimate professional,” added Moore.
“I’m sure that he would carry those principles forward into management and I think it’s a powerful combination of assets.
“Whoever comes in will want to recruit their own talent, and somebody like Steven Gerrard at the helm would be a sales pitch for the club and have people wanting to come in and put everything on the line for the manager and the club.”
Back at Ibrox as recently as last month to play in A Legends charity match, Moore was himself linked with a possible director of football gig there 14 months ago during his tenure as Brisbane Roar’s football director.
He feels Rangers are making incremental progress and the possibility of Gerrard going head-to-head with his former Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers would deliver extra spice to the Old Firm rivalry.
“Rangers are making steady headway and those of us who shared great times at the club will be extremely patient,” added Moore, who won five league titles and four Scottish Cups during his nine years in Glasgow.
“We know the reality is that everything won’t be turned around overnight and be like it used to be.
“It’s a work in progress and what the fans want to see most is a club heading in the right direction.
“The next challenge is to bridge that gap with Celtic and there’s a lot at stake over the next few years.
“Right now Celtic have a better squad and a lot more depth.
“If you bring in Gerrard you have somebody who would come in make changes and bring a real drive.
“He’s a name which would resonate with Rangers fans and the potential rivalry with Brendan Rodgers is a massive selling point also.”
Having recently quit the Roar, Moore is now moving onto a new chapter as a player agent.
He plans to conduct the bulk of his business outside Australia, and jetted to Brazil last month to run the rule over several players and build on a network of existing contacts.
“There’s a lot business to be done there,” he added. “Coming away from Brisbane Roar, I made the decision I wanted to do something different.
“I think the player management pathway is something that will come pretty naturally to me.”
