Dallas had an ultimately disappointing 2020 WNBA season, finishing ninth in the 12-team league and missing out on the playoffs.
On Wednesday they announced they would be moving forward with former player Johnson as their head coach.
Johnson, a two-time WNBA all-star (1999, 2001), steps up to the role from the Las Vegas Aces, where she was assistant coach.

The Aces had the best record last season, making it to the 2020 WNBA Finals where they lost to Seattle Storm.
"I am excited to be able to work with a promising group of young and talented players," Johnson said.
"My goal is to build a strong foundation and a championship team. I know that it will take time, hard work and dedication, and I am up for the challenge.
"I have established Dallas as my home base since 2004 and I have been an active member of this community.
"I am now thrilled to be able to coach in the city that I love.“
