A French petty crook is wrongly convicted of murder and becomes obsessed with escaping from prison. His repeated attempts at breaking out land him in solitary confinement, where he is determined not to give into madness. Finally, he is condemned to the notorious escape-proof prison on Devil's Island, built on sheer cliffs. However, he is not deterred and plans one more escape - which may cost him his life.
