In the mid '90s, actor Joachim Król earned two wins as Best Actor at the German Film Awards. The first was for "Wir können auch anders...," a "Dumb and Dumber"-type narrative played more for deadpan laughs than for slapstick. He followed with another comedy, "Maybe... Maybe Not," in which he played Norbert, a gay man who provides the place to stay for a stranger who has just broken up with his girlfriend. When the girlfriend becomes pregnant, it leads to a whole host of comic situations and juxtapositions. With these two films, Król disproved the age-old adage that Germans are not funny. For his third German Film Award nomination in 1999, the actor played a restaurant owner in '30s-era Budapest who hires a pianist to entertain customers. This leads to an atypical love triangle when both men become involved with a beautiful waitress named Ilona. Król has also starred in a number of German TV productions including as the title character "Lutter" beginning in 2007.
