Basketball superstar Patty Mills paid a visit to Walgett in north-west New South Wales on Thursday to deliver clean drinking water to residents who have otherwise been forced to purchase their water due to the elevated sodium levels in a backup supply.
The San Antonio Spurs champion is working on an initiative with Walgett Local Aboriginal Land Council to help the community access clean drinking water, with full details set to be unveiled next month.
Mr Mills, a Muralag Torres Strait Islander and Ynunga Aboriginal man, married swimwear model Alyssa Levesque earlier this month in Hawaii, telling that, "Mrs Mills let me trade in the honeymoon for an emotionally rewarding and very uplifting visit to remote Indigenous communities".
Walgett residents are reliant on bore water from the Great Artesian Basin and donations of bottled water as the town continues to live through an ongoing drought.
The drought has seen Walgett's main drinking supplies - the Barwon and Namoi Rivers - almost completely dry up.
The bore water is believed by locals to have negative health implications as the water contains elevated sodium levels.
The town's situation became dire when their only supermarket for 80km burnt down last month, putting their drinking water in short supply.
