Latrell Mitchell barred from All Stars, cleared for Charity Shield

The decision has been slammed as the NRL said Mitchell could appear in the official trial between the Rabbitohs and Dragons next month.

The National Rugby League has been criticised over its decision to allow Latrell Mitchell to play in the Charity Shield match later this month, but not the All Stars clash.

The Biripi and Wiradjuri man has two matches left to serve on a six-game suspension for a hit on the Roosters Joey Manu in Round 24 last year.

As per competition rules, suspended players only miss out on playing trial matches if found guilty of at least a grade three offence. Mitchell's hit on Many was a grade two, which means he can take part in the Charity Shield in Mudgee, but not the All Stars clash, as it's a representative fixture.

Indigenous All Stars coach Laurie Daley expressed his disappointment on radio yesterday.

"It certainly would have been special to have Latrell as a part of it," he said.

"I know he would have wanted to be part of this game, but unfortunately he won't be there.

"But I'm sure he'll be doing something with the team throughout the week."

Veteran sports journalist Phil Rothfield was scathing in his assessment of the decision.

“He is the highest profile player in the NRL bar none," said Rothfield speaking on Sky television.

"Why would [you] allow a guy to play in a trial but not in the All Stars? I think it’s wrong.

“I can understand he’s got to miss the first two premiership games, I can understand he won’t be back until Round 3 versus the Sydney Roostersc, but for the life of me I think he should be playing that Indigenous All Stars match."

Mitchell missed the Rabbitohs finals tilt, in which they were narrowly beaten by premiers Penrith in the grand final.

A powerful advocate for First Nations people in the NRL, Mitchell has led the All Stars war dance for a number of years, but will have to watch on this time.

The All Stars event will be held at Sydney's Commbank Stadium on February 12.
