Adelaide University's Centre for Aboriginal Studies in Music - or CASM- has seen a wealth of great Indigenous talent through its centre, starting with Bunna Lawrie and Bart Willoughy in the late 70s.
The CASM band has performed at Nunga events and functions since it commenced, frequently changing as students at the school changed.
But one music lecturer at the school, Grayson Rotumah, has been a constant for nearly 20 years.
He studied there in the mid-90s and says the school has already had a lot of media exposure, claiming that more opportunities exist for talented young people in reality television.
“They've had a lot of experience in that and they're kind of getting an idea of what the industry is about and in particular that kind of industry,” Mr Rotumah said.
The current CASM band is led by a trio consisting of Ellie Lovegrove, Eleanor Lange and Zaachariah Fielding – who finished in the top 12 of the national talent show, X Factor.
Mr Rotumah says when the band recently performed at the Spirit Festival in Adelaide, it was obvious they were well prepared.
“They were absolutely biting at the bit yesterday. It's home ground advantage, they know the community and the community are very proud. They know where they're representing so that was really good for them," Mr Rotumah said.
