The New South Wales Government has launched a new training package aimed at helping Corrective Services staff manage trauma-related behaviour in the state's prison system.
It comes amid growing concerns over the high rates of sexual abuse experienced by female prisoners.
Prison authorities estimate that nationally, 90 per cent of Aboriginal women and 82 per cent of non-Aboriginal women in prison have been sexually abused at some point in their lives.
The training package allows staff to develop their cultural awareness skills and build trustworthy relationships with female offenders.
NITV News reporter Tara Callinan spoke with a 30 year old Bundjalung woman at Sydney's Silverwater Women's Corrective Centre about her personal experiences in the lead up to her imprisonment.
