A 35-year-old Indigenous man has died in custody at Long Bay Prison Hospital, after being found unresponsive in a cell on Tuesday last week.
The cause of the man’s death is unknown, but it is believed he had a preexisting medical condition.
In a statement to NITV News On Monday, a spokeswoman for Corrective Services NSW confirmed the man had died on March 2.
“He was found unresponsive in his cell at about 12.55pm before he was pronounced dead at 1.32pm,” read the statement.
“Corrective Services NSW and NSW Police are investigating the incident.
“All deaths in custody are subject to a coronial inquest.”
A police spokeswoman said the NSW Police Corrective Services Investigation Team attended the hospital, which is attached to Long Bay Correctional Complex in Malabar.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
