Environmentalists in Indonesia are making a renewed call for Australia to stop exporting waste for recycling. Indonesia has become one of the top export destinations for the world’s recovered waste. The country has banned waste with more than 2% of impurities, such as unwanted plastic, which is often dumped in local villages and burned. The federal government has pledged to reduce reliance on Asia, but the industry here says not enough is being done to support recycling in Australia. To make sense of a global and growing problem, SBS Asia Correspondent Aaron Fernandes filed this report from East Java.
