Football fans have made hilarious changes to Mathew Leckie’s Wikipedia page, after Australia beat Denmark at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
The Socceroos forward’s page was edited on Thursday to state, “Leckie is married to the game, and is the father of one son, Denmark”.
It was Leckie’s solo goal that led the Socceroos to a 1-0 victory against Denmark early on Thursday morning.
The win secured Australia’s spot in the final 16 of the tournament, for only the second time in history.
The tongue-in-cheek Wikipedia edit has now been erased from the site, but it’s not the first time pranksters have targeted the Socceroos during the World Cup.
Fellow forward Mitchell Duke’s Wikipedia page was changed to state he “has one son named Tunisia”, after he scored Australia’s winning goal against Tunisia on Saturday night.
The anonymous editor also claimed Duke was “raised by kangaroos in the outback and would often fight them, especially over a tasty sausage on the BBQ”.
Those edits were also removed from the site shortly after posting.
As the Socceroos head to the knockout stage, elated fans took to social media to celebrate Australia’s World Cup success.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese had many responses to his Tweet congratulating the Socceroos, with many asking for a public holiday to celebrate the win.
While others wondered if a certain Australian-born Danish princess felt conflicted over the match-up.
But it wasn’t all praise for the Aussies, some had nice things to say about Denmark’s performance.
Australia will take on Argentina in their round of 16 clash on Sunday morning.
